FDA approves San Diego company's blood testing device for doctors' offices

1+ hour, 20+ min ago (205+ words) A San Diego medical technology company received FDA approval this morning for a device that could transform how patients get blood tests done. The FDA approved Truvian's new Tru-Verus machine, which can run nearly three dozen common blood tests right in a doctor's office. The approval means patients won't have to make separate appointments at labs and can receive results in minutes rather than days. The device allows patients to discuss their test results with their doctor immediately during their appointment, eliminating the need for follow-up visits or waiting for email notifications. "People don't regularly go get their blood tests done because it's inconvenient and it's not accessible and it costs money, and so we've been working to bring down all of those barriers through this technology, and through the technology, we can now democratize blood testing," Truvian founder Dena…...

UC San Diego is trying to solve a remedial math problem

2+ hour, 19+ min ago (874+ words) The need for remedial math education at UC San Diego has soared over the last five years according to a report published this month by the university's Senate Administration Workgroup on Admissions. "The number of students who are not able to perform at high school level increased, and even the number of students who can't perform at middle school level increased enormously," said Akos Rona-Tas, co-chair of the workgroup and a professor of sociology. In 2020, university data show 1 in 200 incoming students needed remedial math. This year that number is about 1 in 8 students. The report lists a wide range of factors contributing to this change. "One of those causes is COVID which had a detrimental effect on K-12 education," Rona-Tas said. The report also cites the elimination of SAT and ACT requirements, high school grade inflation and changes to the admissions process…...

Carlsbad considers age restrictions for e-bikes as safety concerns grow across San Diego County

6+ hour, 49+ min ago (305+ words) CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) " Carlsbad could become the latest city in San Diego County to set age restrictions for electric bikes as safety concerns continue to mount across the region. The Carlsbad City Council will consider new e-bike regulations Tuesday afternoon, potentially establishing a minimum age requirement for certain types of electric bikes capable of reaching speeds up to 20 miles per hour. The proposed changes follow the passage of Assembly Bill 2234, which gives cities in San Diego County's unincorporated areas the authority to set their own minimum age requirements for e-bike riders. Over the summer, the Carlsbad City Council asked the city manager, police chief and city attorney to develop ideas to improve e-bike enforcement. In September, more than 550 community comments were submitted, with most supporting a minimum age of 12 and many requesting additional rules and restrictions. Carlsbad's consideration follows Coronado's…...

The Changing Shape of San Diego’s Zonie-Hate

11+ hour, 19+ min ago (1026+ words) It's'the kind of word you can taste. The kind'that leaves a thin film of antipathy on your tongue.' While the sentiment'emerged'from the predictable grumblings of a tourist town,'it betrays a sort of desperate, grasping nativism. After all, the family from Prescott, or the 20-somethings from Phoenix, for example, get to rent for a comparatively cheaper cost what San Diegans pay dearly for " San Diego.' And'in recent years, as that cost has continued to shoot up, chasing locals away,'San Diegans'performative'disdain for'Zonies'feels less a product of actual disdain for'Zonies,'and more'like a latent'fear'that'our'love affair with this city is an unrequited one." Beef Week'is a Voice of San Diego reporting series. This week our newsroom will bringing you stories about all the beef and battles in San Diego.'Read more Beef Week stories here. San Diego FC's historic first season ends with playoff loss, but team looks ahead to bright future

16+ hour ago (465+ words) SAN DIEGO (KGTV) " San Diego FC's record-setting inaugural season came to an end Saturday night with a 3-1 loss to Vancouver in the MLS Western Conference Final, but the expansion franchise is already looking ahead to what promises to be an even brighter future. Head Coach Mikey Varas reflected on the disappointing finish after two days to process the defeat that ended the team's remarkable playoff run. "I'll think about the first 11 minutes for a long time," Varas said in comments on Monday from team headquarters at the Sharp Healthcare Performance Center in El Cajon. The coach believes his team played well after giving up two quick goals in the opening minutes, but it was simply too much to overcome against Vancouver. While his first season at the helm is now over, Varas truly believes it's the beginning of something incredibly…...

How to see the last supermoon of the year in San Diego County

17+ hour, 31+ min ago (231+ words) You may see headlines about super blood moons, strawberry moons or blue moons " but what do these names actually mean? Here's what you need to know. The last'supermoon'of the year will shine soon in December skies. Supermoons happen a few times a year in clusters, taking advantage of the sweet spot in the moon's elliptical orbit, and Thursday night's event is the'last of three in a row'in 2025. According to the Griffith Observatory, the full moon peaks around 3:15 p.m. Thursday and will be the biggest and brightest as the night falls. The supermoon can be glimpsed in clear night skies without any special equipment. But it can be tough to discern the subtle change with the naked eye. A more popular term than a scientific one, a supermoon occurs when a full lunar phase syncs up with an especially close swing around…...

ICE arrests at San Diego green card interviews include military spouses

19+ hour, 8+ min ago (948+ words) As ICE continues to arrest people in San Diego during their green card interviews, the final step in a legal pathway, some of the people taken into custody have been spouses of military members and veterans, including one who said he felt "betrayed" after serving for decades in the U.S. Marine Corps. ICE has repeatedly said these arrests, which began Nov. 12, are for overstaying visas. But multiple immigration attorneys contend that's never been an issue before, with an exception in federal law for direct relatives of U.S. citizens, including spouses, who are going through the green card process. "I kind of feel betrayed, to be honest," said Samuel Shasteen, a retired Staff Sergeant who said he spent 20 years with the Marines, including two deployments to Afghanistan. "We do everything that we can to protect and serve our country. And then they betray…...
